The Artist
The Artist
#pascalcampionart.
_Lily, go to bed honey.
_Just one more drawing mommy!
_Sigh… just like her daddy.
You just can’t stop being an artist… you don’t learn to be an artist, you just are one.. you learn tools and techniques, you mostly learn how to canalize and direct your creative energy, but you don’t learn how to be an artist

Pop and I go fishing,,but not really
Pop and I go fishing,,but not really
#pascalcampionart
_Pop, how come we are not trying to catch anything?
_ We are..
_ What are we trying to catch?
_ A memory.
_...hu.. we can't eat a memory Pop.
_ It will feed your head when you get older .
_ Pop?
_yes.
_ Are you ok?
_ Never better.
_Ok.
_Ok.
_ I love you Pop.
_ I love you too.
You know, one of the coolest thing about drawing , to me, is not just the fact that you can create new worlds, exciting adventures, and fun characters... it's also when you can recreate a memory.
This scene never happened, this dialog, as such, never did, but it's all taken from bits and pieces of my childhood and this image , in a way, is one of the best captures of my relationship with my dad.
I see so many artists, especially younger ones, always trying to imitate other artists, always trying to figure out how to draw like them, but so few actually try to create life.
People will forget the drawing, but they won't forget the emotion in it if they can feel it.
Try this guys.. pick a strong moment of your life, whatever that moment is.. it could be a break up or your first kiss, it could be something that happened with your big brother or your grandpa, the first time you traveled to another country..something that has impacted you, and create a series of images about it.
The first one should be easy, but as soon as you get your first idea out , you'll realize that coming up with something new will force you to be honest with yourself, and you'll find that you can't just rely on what you know already.. you'll have to develop new skills just for that.. just to get that bit of truth out.. and you will start telling stories.
Just try it.

Marvel Covers
Marvel Covers
While we're talking about Disney and stuff....
And because I've been told that I should talk more about what I do outside of sketches, and, finally, because I got too busy today to do an actual sketch, here are some of the Variant covers I've done for Marvel comics...
I definitely have a harder time with these because the dynamic style is something I still need to work on, but, boy oh boy.. this is SO much fun to do.
So..let me see.. the first two are Guardians of the Galaxy , then Captain America, then Agents of Shield( LOVED working on that one), Thor, Cap and Iron Man( this one was cool because I had to base it off an old Jack Kirby cover and it was like being a twelve year old all over again), Wolverine and a new series that sounds pretty cool.
There... That should be good for work news for a day..right?
Wonderground Gallery.
Starting tomorrow, the Wonderground Gallery in Disney Land will carry these three prints.

..If you want to know the little story behind them... the fire truck is because my son Colin loves firetrucks, Peter Pan is for Max because he's a bit of a dreamer( like his daddy) and I was hoping to do Jasmine for Lily because that's her favorite Princess, but that choice wasn't available.. the close second was Mulan( And Mulan with her dad of course!!)

A little water... a little thought
A little water... a little thought
#pascalcampionart.
Just a thought...
Every couple of weeks or month I look at my work and feel like it sucks.
Emotionally, it's not fun , but rationally, I have been through this so often( let's see... I've been drawing for a few decades now, so.. it's happened a few hundred times, maybe a thousand even....just to let you know guys, we ALL go through this).
The reason for this feeling varies, but it's usually all centered around the fact that we see our work so often, we can't see anything new with it, and we focus on the flaws... and pretty much convince ourselves that if we see these flaws so clearly, that is the only thing that other people can see.( at least, that's one of the recurring thought process in my mind).
It doesn't help that the internet provides copious amounts of fresh new art every ..minute or so, that just reinforces this idea that your own art is just not that great.( A funny thing about that though...is that every new artist you discover goes through that same process...funny, no?)
One of the things I have noticed for me is that a good way to get over that, other than just sitting down and letting it pass..which works too .... is to just try something different.
Trying something different in these situations is tricky, because you already don't like what you do best, so you're trying something new at which you KNOW you are not going to be as good.. it's really a bizarre thing... but it's also the best time to do it, because if you accept the fact that you will not create a master piece, you will probably let yourself experiment outside of your comfort zone, and surprise yourself...even if in the end the image comes back to what you know how to do... ( the reason for that is because your mind is trained to look at art and analyze it according to your standards...so when you do something different, you're still judging it by the standards with which you judge your own production...so you tend to bring that new thing back to what you do...but doing the new thing opens up your mind to the possibility of expanding your tastes and by that fact.. open up your abilities.
Doing something different when you feel like you're in the wrong line of work, that you'd rather be a janitor, a whale watcher or the president of the moon because these jobs must surely be easier , is a great way to get over the humps and help you break new ground in your art..even if you don't see it as such at the moment.
Anyhow... this is something different for me.. I can see that I was trying a different approach and brought it back to something I usually do, but it's made me thing and try something new, and, in a few months, maybe even in a year, or next week, I'll be able to incorporate that into my natural work flow.

Batter UP!
Batter UP!
#pascalcampionart.
A super quick one.. we just did that with Lily and the boys in the front yard...and it just struck me that the light, the moment, everything from the fact that Lily is wearing a beautiful dress that she picked and playing like softball , with all her scrapes and scratches.. it all made me think that this was a living sketch.. the light in the back was EXACTLY like this... I just wanted to capture that moment before it was gone.
I love you Lily. You make me proud, every single day.
